How to Answer Questions About Moving Out of Management
How to Answer Questions About Moving Out of ManagementHow to Answer Questions About Moving Out of ManagementNot every worker wants to go into management, but in many careers, it can seem like its impossible to move up unless youre willing to become someone elses boss. For this reason, its leid uncommon for people to take on a managerial role and then quickly discover that its not right for them. How can you transition back into your former job or one like it without taking a hit to your career? Maybe you are a sales manager who now wants to go back to sales, an editor who wants to be a writer again, or a principal who wants to get back into the classroom. Whatever your situation, your goal is the same to return to the work that interests you without moving backward (or giving the hiring manager the impression that youd doing so). This can be very tricky during a job interview. You want to avoid giving the impression that your previous job was too challenging for you, or that your e not ambitious, while conveying your interest in the role under consideration. Your challenge in accounting for your desire to downshift is to answer questions about it without seeming like you lack motivation or are looking for an easier job. Tips for Responding to Questions About Moving Out of Management Prepare for interview questions about your desire to downshift from a management job to a specialist position. The more at ease you are answering questions about your goals, the better impression youll make on the hiring manager. In the end, you will want your interviewer to understand that you are highly motivated to pursue the new job on its own merits and not as a way to escape an unsatisfying or difficult role as a manager. 1. Be Positive About Your Former Management Role One approach is to frame your answer as a partieal preference for the new position while emphasizing your success and satisfaction in the higher-level role. It will help to provide specific examples of how you were effective as a manager and how you impacted the bottom line. Begin by mentioning aspects of your manager role which you enjoyed, and paint an overall picture of at least a modest level satisfaction. Avoid complaining about the challenges and difficulties of managing others, since your interviewer might begin to view you as someone who has problems interacting with co-workers or who avoids taking responsibility. 2. Explain Why You Want This New Role Next, its important to explain what attracts you to the non-management position youre seeking. Make sure to be specific. If possible, discuss the success you might have had in the non-management jobs you had in the past. Tell stories about your accomplishments in the position, and describe your level of satisfaction with enthusiasm. In fruchtwein cases, you will be reflecting back on prior roles for example, you might be discussing your experience an engineer prior to becoming an engineering director. 3. Look for Opportunitie s to Show Growth Every job you take has something to teach you. Your last position showed you that you werent interested in management but thats not all you learned at that job. Think about the skills you acquired, the experience you gained, the techniques you perfected during your time in that role. For example, maybe you no longer want to be an editor, but your experience editing has taught you how to give editors cleaner copy. Thats a big selling point for a hiring manager. 4. Provide Examples Make sure that you also incorporate any examples of how you performed a specialist role as part of your management duties and how that felt for you. For example, a sales manager may intervene to close a big sale with a major customer from time to time. That type of experience can be the perfect story point for explaining your inspiration to return to the prior role. 5. Solve Their Problem Ultimately, hiring managers are interested in candidates who can provide them with solutions to their biggest challenges. If you can demonstrate your ability to do that, youll allay any fears they might have about why youre making this particular move. Before you head into the interview, review the job description in the ad, looking for keywords that apply to the role (and hopefully, your experience). Then, mine your qualifications for those terms and prepare to explain why youre the person who can provide whats needed.

5 Online Alternatives to a Boring Resume
5 Online Alternatives to a Boring Resume 5 Online Alternatives to a Boring Resume 1. Update yur LinkedIn profileThese days, recruiters see your LinkedIn profile before they (and often instead of) see your resume. And considering that 89 percent of recruiters have hired through LinkedIn, having a complete and engaging profile can help you standout during the weeding out process and allows you to highlight your best work. Be sure to take advantage of all of LinkedIns features, including endorsements and recommendations from friends as well as listing publications and or works that you have published, which add credibility to your profile and filling in the summary section, which can help personalize your experiences.2. Sign-up for a VisualCV accountWhile not replacing a resume per se, VisualCV aims to replace a boring CV (curriculum vitae) with an interactive portfolio that really highlights your work. Here is an example of a profile, which anyone can create, regardless of technical experience. Signing up allows you to add performance charts, images, video clips and audio tracks, among other content. Additionally, you can add letters of recommendation, reference lists, and a tracking feature to see when people open the documents. If you create a VisualCV, make sure to constantly update your site as new work is accumulated and to divide your work experience, videos, and photos in an organized manner so that you do not overwhelm recruiters.3. Create an attractive and compelling websiteIf you really want to make an impression and to control exactly what a future employer learns about you, create your own website. If you decide to create your own webpage, but want a little more structure, About.me is the simplest way to have a personalized and flexible online profile. Add social buttons to all of your profiles, write a compelling summary and ensure that you show future employers your best side.4. Craft a Prezi to display the different facets of your lifeWant someth ing more dynamic than a webpage representing you? Many people have opted to create a Prezi-me, which can be shared through a URL, displayed on a social media site or linked in an email signature. Here is a great example of how you can include goals, qualifications, past experiences and additional information about yourself to show your employer who you really are. Make sure your Prezi-me includes all of the same professional sections that your resume would, plus examples of past work, recommendations and make sure to start the presentation with a compelling reason for your employer to sit through the presentation. Lastly, make sure to add a transcript of your Prezi-me (in the information section under your Prezi) in case an employer only wants to reisepass along the text of your presentation.5. Use a video resume and reelWhile some people believe there is a bit of a stigma against using these, video resumes can be a really effective resume tool if used correctly. A video resume enha nces your career portfolio it does not replace it. The right video resume can make you stand out from the crowd the wrong one, at the enjoyment of so many others, can make you a laughing stock. Dont just create a video resume because you can, create one because its relevant to the job you want to do. Show how you will fit into the company culture and demonstrate work, talk about an industry trend, include testimonials, or create an infographic video of your experience. There are so many ways to take smart, creative risks with video that have a higher upside than taking creative risks with a traditional CV.Only 47 percent of people who search themselves in Google liked what they saw of their online reputation. Considering that 37 percent of employers used social media to screen future employers, its important to ensure that you stand out and appear professional. With hundreds of resumes being reviewed for every job opportunity, it is especially important to stand out in the sea of ca ndidates and to represent yourself well. As seen above, using technology to enhance your resume makes it easier and quicker to get your name out there, whether it be linking URLs in email correspondences, using social media sites to get your name out to potential recruiters, or creating a visual experience through a video or Prezi to captivate your recruiter on a new level. Overall, the best practice and most probable change to land a new job is to create and incorporate a few of the suggested tips, which allows you to be active on various mediums and present yourself as the full package.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. How to respond to Tell me about yourself during an interview
How to respond to Tell me about yourself during an interviewHow to respond to Tell me about yourself during an interviewSo, tell me about yourself, the job interviewer says. Your heart sinks instantly. Heres how to respond to this question, even if you were hoping it wouldnt come up in conversation this time.Weave in your credentialsThis will help provide some substance.Alison Doyle, a career expert, author, and founder/CEO of CareerToolBelt.com writes in The Balance that you should transition to professional from personal after sharing certain details. After sharing a few interesting personal aspects of your background, you can pivot to mentioning some key professional skills that would help you to add value if you were hired for your target job, Doyle writes. Consider using phrases like In addition to those interests and passions, my professional life is a huge part of who I am, so Id like to talk a bit about some of the strengths which I would bring to this job.Ladders is now on Sm artNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Consider using this approachKathryn Minshew, CEO of The Muse, talks about a formula from Lily Zhang, one of the publications career experts, in a video on the site.A formula I really like to use is called the Present-Past-Future formula. So, first, you start with the present - where you are right now. Then, segue into the past- a little bit about the experiences youve had and the skills you gained at the previous position. Finally, finish with the future - why you are really excited for this particular opportunity, Minshew says, before giving an example of how to do this.Remember not to drone on, and on and on You might be tempted to ramble on because of nervousness, but you shouldnt talk their ear off.No matter how you answer this question, dont take up too much time with your response. You dont have to tell the hiring manager every single thing that makes you a great fit for the position. Just give a few important details that will spark their interest in learning more and youll get the interview off to a great start, a Robert Half blog post reads.Leave certain topics outRemember that everything isnt fair game here.Avoid mentioning personal information such as marital status, children, political or religious affiliations, etc. These can be highly sensitive topics that might work against you as a candidate, not to mention such details should not be factors for the employer in determining your ability to perform the job, reads a post in the Indeed Career Guide.

How to leave your comfort zone (for the better)
How to leave your comfort zone (for the better)How to leave your comfort zone (for the better)Your life is waiting at the other side of your comfortzone.Inspirational quotes encourage you to do something you wouldnt normally do - you are missing out on life, they tell you. However, crossing the line of your comfort zone is not easy - science shows that experimenting new things makes everyone anxious and worried. The paradox of the FOMO approach is that, rather than neutralizing the fear, it creates more anxiety - those who are afraid of uncertainty get more stressed out. What if you could stretch beyond your comfort zone on your own terms? Not because someone else pushes you to do so.First, you must get rid of the dualistic approach - being comfortable is not the opposite of living dangerously.Meet your comfort zoneDiscomfort may be a doorway dont run from it. ?Joseph DeitchAccording to Merriam-Webster, our comfort zone is the level at which one functions with ease and familiarity. The term was originally coined after the temperature range within which fruchtwein people feel comfortable, and feel neither cold nor hot (68 to 72 F or 20 to 22 C).The comfort zone is a psychological state where one feels safe or at ease and without stress or anxiety.Judith Bardwick, the author of Danger in the Comfort Zone, defines the term as a behavioral state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position. Its a perceived certainty where we believe we have access to all we need - we feel we have some control. This neutral state is both natural and human - our brain is lazy and leans toward the easiest path. We can continue living on autopilot or embrace discomfort to reap bigger rewards. Simply put do you want just to live or to thrive?Research has demonstrated that a state of relative comfort creates a consistent and steady performance. However, relative anxiety - a state where our stress level is higher than normal - can maximize your performance. Conversely, too m uch anxiety drops your productivity off.The challenge is finding what Robert Yerkes and John Dodson called Optimal Anxiety - the sweet-spot between arousal and performance. The Hebbian version of the YerkesDodson lawBeing comfortably numbIs there anybody in there?Just nod if you can hear meIs there anyone at home? - Pink FloydSometimes life hurts. To avoid suffering, we build a wall around ourselves.Comfortably Numb is a Pink Floyds song from the album The Wall. Pink, the character from the namesake movie, is burnt out - he creates a bubble to protect himself from the outside. This wall seems to alleviate the pain, but doesnt allow Pink to overcome the cause of his suffering.Having a comfort zone is not a dicke bretter bohren mssen - building a wall around it makes us feel numb. When we stop stretching beyond our own limits, we stop learning and growing. Thats the danger of staying in the comfort zone all the time - you end up bored and unchallenged.Start by getting rid of the comf ortable is safe uncomfortable is dangerous dualism. You dont have to put your life at risk to leave your comfort zone. There are actually three, not two, zones where you can live. The opposite of the Comfort Zone is the Danger space - personal growth happens in between the Learning Zone.Stretching beyond your comfort zone is not about being courageous, but curious.Only by crossing the line of certainty and familiarity, you can grow. Thats what our current education and parenting model got wrong - by wrapping up kids in bubble plastic, they seeded fear and anxiety. We need to recover the value of no pain, no gain, as I explained here.If youve ever pushed yourself to get to the next level in sports, creativity or learning new skills, you know that feeling - pain is a signal of learning. We all struggle to do something for the first time. We all find it difficult to push ourselves harder and harder.Pain is the voice of resistance - when you stop listening to it, you can focus on makin g progression.Your brain, just like your body, needs training. Neurons that are weak, unused, or that dont fit the job are pruned. Neurons that are exercised get stronger and develop more connections. When you start reaching a point where your inner voice tells you stop, thats when you need to keep going.Every time I go biking, I set a goal. When I get halfway through the miles I decided to ride, my brain sends me a signal telling me to turn around. However, I challenge its laziness - I keep riding for a couple more miles. Thats how I keep pushing myself to bike more.Leaving your comfort zone is not as dangerous as you might think - explore the Learning Zone, not the Danger Zone. Also, though it sounds counterintuitive, there are significant dangers that lurk in the Comfort Zone. If you get too comfortable, you can start to hold yourself back. Also, our comfort zones tend to shrink as we get older.John F. Kennedy said There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long-range risks of comfortable inaction. How to stretch your mind and growThe further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun. ? Benedict Cumberbatch1. Find BalanceLiving outside of your comfort zone all the time can be as harmful as staying put. Training your mind, like in sports, requires not just effort, but to regulate your pace.Enjoying life is a balancing act between familiar and unfamiliar things. Some people will label you as comfortable if you dont want to skydive. However, thats your call. Those who approach life as Gamblers are driven by the thrill of the chase - by desperately avoiding comfort they end living in the Danger, not Learning, Zone.2. Alternate Your DynamicsTo gain better results, mix the intensity and frequency of the challenges. If you run, lets say 10 miles at the same average speed every day, you are not making real progress. Its not that continually exercising is wrong, but always running at a steady pace improves your endurance, not your speed.Running intervals is the best way to increase your overall speed - run at speeds faster than you would race at for small periods of time.3. Become Your Own BenchmarkWhats your baseline? How do you deal with risk and uncertainty? What most extremists miss is that everyones comfort zone is different - you cant apply a one-size-fits-all approach. Those who are familiar with my line of work and writing, know that Im always challenging myself and those around me. However, my experience both as a former CEO and now coaching hundreds of teams has taught me a great lesson you cant help others applying your standard. How much are you willing to stretch beyond their comfort zone? Dont push yourself too hard.4. Incremental Progression Changes Your ShapeExpanding your comfort zone requires multiple progressions to achieve long-lasting results.Think of your comfort zone as a rubber band. If you stretch it all of a sudden, you might be deceive d by its apparent larger shape. Once you let go of the rubber band, not only it will go back to its original form, but it can actually hit you.The Ten Percent Advantage is an approach to create everyday progress focusing on small 10% increments will move you forward. The most important part it will help you build the momentum to turn leaving your comfort zone into a habit, not a one-off.5. Theres No Trying Theres Only DoingParaphrasing Yoda, trying doesnt count its doing what matters.Do the same things differently. Do things that scare you. Do things that you love but stopped doing them. Do something for the first time. Do something everyone is telling you shouldnt do.The common theme is doing - thats how you leave your comfort zone. And, when what was once uncomfortable, becomes the new normal its time to do more.Remember, when you leave your comfort zone, you wont find danger, but the learning zone.Stretch beyond your comfort zoneDownloadmy ebook Stretch Your Team - how to thriv e in a changing worldget your free copy.Thisarticlefirst appeared on Medium.

3 Ways Employers Can Save Time in the Busy Season - Spark Hire
3 Ways Employers Can Save Time in the Busy Season - Spark HireThe holiday season is upon us and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. After Thanksgiving it always seems as though Christmas is in full swing and the madness begins. Right after that you have New Years. Its a non-stop period of friends, family, shopping and cooking. Its a jovial and exciting time, but we cant forget that our daily work load and schedules must still go on During the holiday season, it can be a bit more difficult staying on top of things with so much else going on. Thats why employers and hiring managers should jump at anything that can save them time and energy in the hiring process. Even though the holidays are in the background, positions in the company must still be filled and for some companies its the busiest time of the year. Thankfully, there are a number of tools hiring managers can use in order to save themselves time and stress during the holiday season.One-Way Video Interviews At the top of list for saving hiring managers and employers time are one-way video interviews. The phone interview has been a staple of the hiring process for as long as hiring managers can remember. Therefore, it should be well-known that phone interviews can eat up a whole lot of time. In fact, it takes on average 30 minutes to complete a phone interview with a candidate. How many times have you spoken with a candidate on the phone and knew within five minutes that they were not going to jive well with the position? To be kind and polite, you stayed on the phone for the extra 25 minutes anyways. What a waste of time. Phone interviews are enough to kill anybodys holiday cheer. With one-way video interviews, saving time for you is the number one goal. When you hear that you can complete 10 one-way video interviews in the same time it takes for you to complete that one phone interview, you cant deny the time-saving effects. With one-way video interviews, you send candidates the questions you want a nswered and they send you their answers in video. That way, if you dont like what they have to say with the first few questions, you can move on to the next candidate gracefully with no guilt.Live Video InterviewsAs another tool in the inspektion process, live video interviews can save employers some more time in hiring. With live video interviews on Spark Hire, employers can get face-to-face with candidates right away before inviting them into their office for an in-person interview. You can dig deeper into their qualifications and learn even more about them than you did in the one-way interview without ever having to leave your desk. The best part about live video interviews is that you can speak with candidates that are in another state and expand your candidate pool. This can be especially helpful during the holiday season when there is a lot going on. If you are really interested in a candidate that is far away, it would be really difficult to coordinate a time for them to come in to meet during the holiday season. With live video interviews, you can interview with them online, and both you and the candidate can know that if they do come into the office it will not be a waste of time and travel.Knowing the lage Aside from video interviews, what can save employers and hiring managers even more time is to know the role you are hiring for like the back of your hand. Without a deep understanding of how the role operates, what skills are necessary, how the role supports the one above it, etc. then it will be extremely difficult to find the perfect candidate for it. Knowing the ins and and outs of the position will shave time off the hiring process because you will be able to weed out bad candidates that much faster. Creating a great job description is part of this tip and can work to shave time off the hiring process as well.Office work and hiring must go on during the holiday season, but anything to cut back on the stress and time associated with the hiring p rocess should be welcomed. Keep the holiday cheer and implement some of these tips to cut back on some of the time you spend hiring this holiday season. What are some things you do to save time in the hiring process?
